SSBN 827 will be the third United States Navy vessel named after the State of Wisconsin. The previous two, both battleships, had distinguished careers for several decades.

The first USS Wisconsin (BB-9) was commissioned in 1901 and served until 1920 all over the world, most notably during the Russo-Japanese War and as part of the Great White Fleet global cruise 1907-1909. Artifacts from this USS Wisconsin are on display at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison. The ship’s silver can be viewed at Nauticus in Norfolk, Virginia.

A part of the famous Iowa Class, she was the last U.S. battleship, and today is a museum in Norfolk, Virginia. For more information about BB-64, see: Wisconsin II
